About The Role

We have a unique opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join our groundwater team delivering a wide range of geotechnical, groundwater control and hydrogeology projects.

Preene Groundwater Consulting, part of Richter Associates, is a leading specialist in the planning, investigation and design of temporary works dewatering and groundwater control systems. The team provides specialist advice and design services in the fields of dewatering and groundwater engineering for clients worldwide. Now as part of the Richter Group, the team are undergoing an exciting period of growth and development.

The successful applicant will become contribute to the leadership and management of a specialist groundwater team undertaking services related to investigating and solving a wide range of groundwater problems on construction projects, including large infrastructure schemes, major tunnelling projects, as well as a wide range of smaller engineering schemes.

This position would ideally suit a geotechnical professional who is currently working in a groundwater consultancy in a hydrogeologist or geotechnical engineer role. This opportunity would also be appropriate for someone with experience in site investigation or specialist geotechnical contracting who wished to apply their skills in design and consulting.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading and mentoring more junior members of staff and helping build effective and successful teams.
  • Planning of desk study and fieldwork elements of groundwater design and investigation projects
  • Managing geotechnical and hydrogeological studies (using analytical and numerical tools) to assess dewatering flow rates, excavation stability and to address other geotechnical problems.
  • Preparing proposals and quotations for design and consultancy projects and project extensions.
  • Acting as the lead client contact on projects and being responsible for the delivery of commercial and programme aspects.
  • Contributing as a senior member of civil and geotechnical engineering design teams to provide specialist input related the design of dewatering systems, cut-off walls and ground treatment to address potential groundwater problems or impacts.
  • Production and checking of designs, interpretative reports, drawings and assessments to communicate the design outcomes and study findings.
  • Selection and direction of sub-contractors including drillers, excavator operators and surveyors.

About You

Essential criteria:

  • MEng, MSc, PhD or equivalent in Geology, Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology, Geotechnical Engineering or Environmental Science.
  • Chartered or close to achieving Chartership with a relevant professional institution.
  • Proficient IT skills including Microsoft packages.
  • Advanced understanding of geology, ground investigation works and geotechnical processes gained in either a consulting or contracting environment.
  • An interest in construction and tunnelling methods and temporary works.
  • Experience with GIS software and geotechnical and groundwater software packages.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of relevant and up to date Industry Guidance (including Eurocodes British Standards).
  • Highly experienced practitioner in the application of UK Health and Safety requirements relating to design and construction.

The Individual:

  • Good project management and organisational skills, with an effective problem solving outlook and the ability to prioritise own work and that of junior team members.
  • Ability to prepare and review designs, interpretative reports and related documents to a high standard.
  • Good business acumen and some experience of financial and commercial aspects of projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to express ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly in geotechnical principles
  • A proactive and independent thinker with an enthusiastic approach to work.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
